Cuiviénen, meaning “water of awakening” was the location in the far east of Middle-earth where the Elves first awoke.

It was located on the shores of the great Sea of Helcar, at the foot of the Orocarni Mountains.

The Elves that left Cuiviénen for the long journey west to  were known as the Eldar. Those who chose to stay were known as the Avari, or “unwilling”.
